How to resize an image to a specific size in KB

Online applications, exam forms and job portals often accept photos only below a size such as 50 KB, and signatures below 20 KB. Here is how to hit the limit and keep the picture clear.

Step by step

  1. Open the Image Resizer and choose your photo.
  2. Under Resize by, choose File size (KB) and enter the limit, for example 50, or click one of the ready sizes.
  3. Download the result. The size is shown before you save, so you can check it is under the limit.

For the most common limit there is a ready-made page: resize image to 50 KB. The photo never leaves your device.

How it gets under the limit

The resizer first lowers the JPG quality step by step, which removes detail the eye barely notices. If that is not enough, it also reduces the width and height until the file fits. Photos stay recognizable well below 50 KB at passport-photo sizes.

When the form also asks for pixels

Some forms want both, for example 200 × 230 pixels and under 50 KB. Resize by Width and height first and download, then open that file again and resize it by File size (KB). To change the shape of the photo, crop it first with Crop Image; for official photo sizes use the Passport Photo Maker.
