Why convert PDF to DOCX?

Word documents can be edited; PDFs mostly cannot. Converting PDF to DOCX is the usual way to reuse the text of a report, CV, letter or assignment when you no longer have the original Word file.

When to keep the PDF

Keep the PDF as the final version to send or print: it looks exactly the same everywhere.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

The Word file is empty or contains only pictures.
The PDF is a scan: its pages are photos with no real text. Converting cannot read text from pictures; this needs OCR (text recognition) software.
The layout looks different from the PDF.
PDF stores exact positions, while Word flows text. The text is all there; adjust spacing, columns and tables in Word.

PDF – Portable Document Format

PDF is the standard format for documents that must look the same on every device. It preserves layout, fonts and images, but is difficult to edit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

Not with editable text. Scanned PDFs contain images of pages, and this converter does not perform OCR.

Is my PDF kept after converting?

No. It is deleted from the server as soon as the Word file is ready.

Can I edit the Word file?

Yes. Text from a PDF made on a computer becomes editable text in the DOCX. The layout is rebuilt with text boxes, so complex pages may need some tidying. A scanned PDF only holds pictures of pages, so its text cannot be edited.

Do I need to give my email?

No. There is no sign-up and no email. The Word file downloads straight from this page.

Can I convert PDF to Word on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone browser, select the PDF and download the DOCX. You can edit it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or WPS Office on the phone.

How do I convert PDF to DOCX?

Click Select File or drop your PDF file onto the upload box. The converted DOCX appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
