Why convert WEBP to PNG?

Many images saved from websites are WebP files, and some programs, older versions of Photoshop, Office and many upload forms still refuse them. PNG opens everywhere, keeps transparency and is the safest choice when you want to edit the image or reuse it in a document.

When to keep the WEBP

If the image will only be used on a web page, keep the WebP: it is smaller and every current browser shows it.

Common problems and fixes

The PNG is much bigger than the WebP.
That is normal: PNG is a lossless format, while most WebP images are lossy. Use a lower Quality or a smaller Max dimension if size matters.
My animated WebP became a still image.
PNG cannot hold animation, so the first frame is used. Use WebP to GIF to keep the animation.

WEBP – WebP

WebP is an image format developed by Google. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and at comparable visual quality its files are usually smaller than JPG or PNG. That is why it is popular for websites, and current versions of all major browsers can display it.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics

PNG stores images with lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it the usual choice for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG is normally far larger than the same photo saved as JPG or WebP.

Frequently asked questions

Why do websites use WebP images?

WebP files are noticeably smaller than PNG and JPG at the same quality, so pages load faster. That is why images you save from many sites arrive as .webp.

Does converting WebP to PNG improve quality?

No conversion can restore detail that the WebP compression already removed, but PNG will not lose anything more, so it is the best format for further editing.

Does WebP to PNG keep a transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, so transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent.

How do I convert WEBP to PNG?

Click Select File or drop your WebP file onto the upload box. Pick the quality and maximum size, and the converted PNG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
