How to protect a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF. Select it or drop it into the box.
  2. Type a password. Type it twice to be sure. Use at least 8 characters, mixing letters and numbers.
  3. Download. The protected PDF asks for the password whenever someone opens it.

When to password-protect a PDF

Before you email a bank statement, salary slip, ID card scan, medical report or contract, add a password and share it by phone or a different chat. Even if the email is forwarded or the file leaks, it cannot be opened without the password.

How strong is it?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the same encryption Adobe Acrobat uses. A long password (12 characters or more) cannot be guessed in any practical time. Short passwords like 1234 or your name can be guessed, so choose a good one.

Remember your password

We do not keep your password or your file, so nobody (not even us) can open the PDF if you forget it. Keep a copy of the original. To remove the password later, use Unlock PDF.

How this works: your PDF is uploaded over HTTPS and processed on this server with open-source tools (qpdf and Ghostscript) in a private temporary folder, which is deleted as soon as the result is ready. Passwords are used once and never stored or logged.
