How to make a US passport photo at home
- Take the photo. Stand in front of a plain white or off-white wall facing a window. Take off your glasses, keep a neutral expression or a natural smile, and ask someone to take the photo from about 4 feet away at eye level.
- Line up your face. Upload the photo, then drag and zoom until your chin and the top of your head sit between the guide lines (1 to 1 3/8 inches of the 2 inch photo).
- Download. Download the 600 x 600 digital photo for an online application, or the 4x6 inch sheet to print and cut out.
US passport photo size
- Printed: 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
- Head: 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the chin to the top of the head.
- Digital: a square photo of at least 600 x 600 pixels; this tool makes 600 x 600.

Tips for a photo that is accepted
- Plain white or off-white background with no shadows, pattern or objects.
- No glasses, unless you have a medical reason and a signed doctor's note.
- Even light on your face, eyes open, and a neutral expression or a natural smile.
- A photo taken in the last 6 months, not edited or filtered.
- Taken by someone else, not a selfie at arm's length, which distorts the face.
