Why convert HEIC to JPG?

iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default. HEIC is efficient, but Windows, many Android phones, websites and government or job portals cannot open it. JPG works everywhere, so converting is the simplest way to share or upload iPhone photos.

When to keep the HEIC

Keep the HEIC originals on your iPhone or in iCloud: they are about half the size of JPG at the same quality and keep features such as depth data for Portrait mode.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

The file will not convert.
Some apps add a .heic name to other kinds of files. Make sure it is a photo straight from the iPhone, not a screenshot shared through another app.
My Live Photo became a still picture.
The moving part of a Live Photo is a separate video file. The HEIC holds the still photo, which is what gets converted.

HEIC – High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is the format iPhones and many recent cameras use for photos. It keeps files roughly half the size of JPG at similar quality, but it is not supported by most browsers and many apps, so photos are often converted to JPG or PNG before sharing.

JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows needs an extra codec from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC, and many programs do not support it at all. Converting to JPG avoids the problem.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is compressed again, so in theory a little detail is lost. At Quality 85 or more you will not see a difference on screen or in normal prints.

Can I convert many iPhone photos at once?

Yes. Select all the HEIC photos together. Each becomes a JPG, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

How do I open iPhone photos on Windows 10 or 11?

Windows only shows HEIC photos after you install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and many programs still cannot read them. Converting the photos to JPG here makes them open everywhere, with nothing to install.

How do I convert iCloud photos to JPG?

Download the photos from iCloud to your computer or phone, then select the HEIC files here. Each one becomes a JPG you can download, or get them all together as a ZIP.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Click Select File or drop your HEIC file onto the upload box. Pick the quality and maximum size, and the converted JPG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
