Why convert SWF to JPG?

Flash Player is gone, so an old SWF video can no longer be opened in a browser. Converting SWF to JPG saves still pictures from the video part of the file, so you can see what it contained and reuse the images, without installing anything.

When to keep the SWF

Keep the SWF if it is interactive (a game, a menu, a quiz): those need the Ruffle emulator to play, and they have no video frames to save as pictures. To watch an SWF video with sound, convert SWF to MP4 instead.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

The SWF does not convert.
It is probably an interactive Flash file or an animation drawn only with vector shapes. These have no video frames to read. Try playing it with Ruffle (ruffle.rs) instead.
The pictures are small.
Many Flash videos were made at small sizes such as 320 x 240 pixels for the web of the time. The pictures are saved at the size stored in the file.

SWF – Shockwave Flash

SWF is an Adobe Flash animation or video. Browsers no longer play Flash, so old SWF videos are converted to MP4.

JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert SWF to JPG without Flash Player?

Yes. The file is read on our server with FFmpeg, so you do not need Flash Player or any software on your computer.

Can I convert a Flash game to JPG?

No. A Flash game is a program, not a video, so there are no fixed frames to save. Play it with Ruffle or the Flashpoint archive instead.

Can every SWF file be converted to JPG?

SWF files that contain video convert well. Interactive Flash games and animations drawn only with vector shapes have no video frames to read, so they cannot be turned into pictures here.

How do I convert SWF to JPG?

Click Select File or drop your SWF file onto the upload box. The converted JPG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
