Why convert JPG to PNG?
People convert JPG to PNG when a website, app or design tool asks for PNG, when they want to edit a picture without adding more compression each time they save, or before cutting out a background to make it transparent.
When to keep the JPG
For ordinary photos JPG is the better format: the PNG will be much larger and will not look any sharper, because the detail lost when the JPG was made cannot be brought back.
Tips for the best result
- Set Quality to 100 for an exact, full-colour copy of the photo. Lower values reduce the number of colours to make the file smaller.
- PNG does not add transparency by itself. Remove the background in an image editor after converting.
- Phone photos are turned upright automatically.
- Camera data such as GPS location, device model and date is removed from the converted file, so it is safe to share.
Common problems and fixes
- The PNG is several times bigger than the JPG.
- That is expected: PNG stores every pixel without loss. Use a lower Quality or a smaller Max dimension, or keep the JPG.
- Gradients in the sky look banded.
- Below Quality 100 the colours are reduced to a palette. Convert again at Quality 100.
JPG
JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics
PNG stores images with lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it the usual choice for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG is normally far larger than the same photo saved as JPG or WebP.

Converting JPG to PNG
- PNG files are often larger than JPG files. If size matters, lower the Quality slider or choose a smaller Max dimension.
- PNG keeps transparency and sharp edges. To keep files small, the number of colours is reduced to match your Quality setting.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is now, so no more quality is lost, but it cannot undo the compression already in the JPG.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. You can make it transparent afterwards in an image editor.
How do I convert JPG to PNG on my phone?
Open this page in your phone browser, tap Select File and pick the photos from your gallery. The PNG files download straight to your phone, with nothing to install.
Can I convert many JPG files to PNG at once?
Yes. Select or drop several JPG files together. Each one is converted, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
How do I convert JPG to PNG?
Click Select File or drop your JPG file onto the upload box. Pick the quality and maximum size, and the converted PNG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.
Are my files stored?
Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.
Will quality drop?
For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.
How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
