Why convert JPG to WEBP?

Turning JPG photos into WebP is one of the easiest ways to speed up a website. At the same visual quality a WebP photo is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG, which cuts page weight and loading time, especially on mobile data.

When to keep the JPG

Keep JPG for sending photos by email or messaging apps, for printing, and for anyone who will open the picture in older software. JPG is still the most widely supported photo format.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

A site will not accept the WebP.
Some older platforms and forms still accept only JPG or PNG. Keep the original JPG for those.
The WebP is bigger than the JPG.
This happens with JPGs that were already compressed very hard. Lower the Quality to 60 to 70, or keep the original.

JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

WEBP – WebP

WebP is an image format developed by Google. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and at comparable visual quality its files are usually smaller than JPG or PNG. That is why it is popular for websites, and current versions of all major browsers can display it.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google rank my site better with WebP?

Faster pages are part of how Google judges page experience, and smaller images are the most common quick win. WebP alone will not move rankings, but it helps your pages load faster.

Can I convert many JPGs to WebP at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many JPG files as you like; each one is converted and you can download them all together as a ZIP.

How do I convert JPG to WEBP?

Click Select File or drop your JPG file onto the upload box. Pick the quality and maximum size, and the converted WebP appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
