Why convert PNG to JPG?

Photos and screenshots saved as PNG can be several megabytes. The same picture as a JPG is often five to ten times smaller, which makes it easier to email, upload and share. JPG is also the format most forms and sites ask for.

When to keep the PNG

Keep PNG for logos, icons, line art and anything with text or a transparent background: JPG blurs sharp edges slightly and cannot store transparency.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

Text in my screenshot looks fuzzy.
JPG compression softens hard edges. Raise the Quality to 90 or more, or keep the PNG for screenshots that are mostly text.
The logo now has a white box around it.
JPG cannot be transparent. Keep the logo as PNG or convert it to WebP, which supports transparency and is small.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics

PNG stores images with lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it the usual choice for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG is normally far larger than the same photo saved as JPG or WebP.

JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my JPG so much smaller than the PNG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly; JPG discards detail the eye barely notices. For photos that makes JPG many times smaller with no visible difference.

How do I make a photo under 100 KB or 200 KB?

Convert to JPG, then lower the Quality and set a Max dimension such as 1200 pixels. Check the size in the list and convert again with other settings if needed.

Can I convert many PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Select or drop all the PNG files together and download the JPG results one by one or as a single ZIP.

Should I use JPG or PNG for an online form?

Most forms that ask for a photo want JPG because the files are much smaller. Convert to JPG here, then lower the Quality or choose a Resize option if the form has a size limit.

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Click Select File or drop your PNG file onto the upload box. Pick the quality and maximum size, and the converted JPG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
