Why convert MP4 to JPG?

Sometimes you need a picture, not a video: a thumbnail for YouTube or a blog, a still of a moment you filmed, slides from a recorded lecture, or frames to compare side by side. Converting MP4 to JPG saves still pictures from the video at full size, so you do not have to pause and take blurry screenshots.

When to keep the MP4

Keep the MP4: the pictures are single moments and do not include sound or motion. If you want a short moving clip instead, convert MP4 to GIF.

Tips for the best result

Common problems and fixes

A picture is blurry.
Fast movement is blurred in the video itself. Trim the video to the moment you need and convert again to get every second of it, then pick the sharpest picture.
I need more pictures from a long video.
Long videos give 60 evenly spaced pictures. Cut the part you need with Trim Video and convert that shorter clip to get one picture per second.

MP4 – MPEG-4 Part 14

JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. It does not support transparency or animation, and virtually every device, browser and app can open it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a still picture from a video?

Upload the MP4, keep JPG as the output and download the ZIP of pictures. Pick the one you need; the file names show where in the video each one is.

Does it work for long videos?

Yes. A long video gives 60 pictures evenly spread over its length. Files up to the size limit shown on the page can be uploaded.

How many pictures do I get?

One picture for every second of a clip up to a minute long. A longer video gives 60 pictures spread evenly from start to end. Each file name shows the time in the video, such as frame-012-0m11s.jpg.

Are the pictures full size?

Yes. Each picture has the same width and height as the video, so a 1080p video gives 1920 x 1080 pictures.

How do I convert MP4 to JPG?

Click Select File or drop your MP4 file onto the upload box. The converted JPG appears in the list below with a download button. You can add many files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. To keep the service available for everyone there is a 95MB limit per file and a cap on how many files one connection can process in a short period.

Are my files stored?

Your upload is used only to make the converted file. Images are processed in memory; other files are written to a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. Nothing is kept after the result has been sent back.

Will quality drop?

For images, a little, by design: the image is re-encoded at the Quality you choose (default 75%). Audio and video are re-encoded with high-quality settings; documents keep their text and layout as far as the target format allows. Converting never restores detail that is already missing from the original.

How this works: your file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on this server with open-source engines (libvips for images, FFmpeg for audio and video, LibreOffice and Pandoc for documents, Calibre for ebooks, Ghostscript and Inkscape for PDF and vector files). Images are processed in memory; other files use a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.
