How to read EPUB books on Kindle

EPUB is the most common ebook format, used by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most free ebook sites. Kindles cannot open EPUB files copied over USB, but there are easy ways around it.

Option 1: Send to Kindle (easiest)

Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB files and converts them for your Kindle automatically. You can use it by:

The book appears in your library on every Kindle and Kindle app.

Option 2: Convert and copy over USB

If you prefer copying files with a cable, convert the EPUB to a Kindle format first:

Connect the Kindle to your computer and copy the file into its documents folder.

Note that Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI files, so use AZW3 or EPUB for new books.

Option 3: PDF

EPUB to PDF works on any device, but PDF pages do not reflow, so text can be small on a Kindle screen. Use it mainly for printing.

Why some books will not convert

Books bought from stores such as Kobo, Google Play or Apple Books are usually protected with DRM. DRM-protected books cannot be converted. DRM-free books, such as those from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and many independent authors, convert without problems.
