How to make a UK passport photo at home
- Take the photo. Stand in front of a plain, light-coloured wall facing a window, with a neutral expression, and ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 metres at eye level.
- Line up your face. Upload the photo, then drag and zoom until your chin and the top of your head sit between the guide lines (29 to 34 mm of the 45 mm photo).
- Download. Download the digital photo (700 x 900 pixels) for an online application, or the 6x4 inch sheet to print and cut out.

- Printed: 35 mm wide and 45 mm high.
- Head: 29 to 34 mm from chin to the top of the head.
- Digital (online applications): at least 600 x 750 pixels; this tool makes 700 x 900.

Tips for a photo that is accepted
- Plain, light background with no shadows or objects behind you.
- Even light on your face; no flash and no glare on glasses.
- Eyes open and visible, mouth closed, hair away from your eyes.
- Taken by someone else, not a selfie at arm's length, which distorts the face.
