How to write a cover letter
Open the Cover letter template and replace the sample text with your own. A strong cover letter has three parts:
- Opening. Name the job and where you saw it, and say in one sentence why you want it.
- Proof. Pick two or three achievements from your resume that match what the employer needs and explain them briefly, with numbers.
- Close. Thank the reader, say you would welcome an interview, and sign off with your name and phone number.
Cover letter tips
Address the letter to a person if you can find a name; "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine if you cannot. Keep it under one page, around 250 to 400 words. Do not repeat your whole resume: the letter should explain why you and this job fit together. Use the same font and colour as your resume so they look like one application, and save the file as firstname-lastname-cover-letter.pdf.
Sign your letter
Use Sign to draw your signature with a mouse or finger, or type it in a handwriting font, and place it above your printed name. The signature is saved inside the PDF.
